Ryu-matto

The Japanese word for dragon is ryū (龍).

Folklore about Benkei tell the story of his personal quest in order to take 1000 swords from samurai warriors that were arrogant and unworthy to his belief. ‌‌

In this print, Benkei is depicted on the front of the ship in which his master Yoshitsune was once forced to flee.

Not far from Kyoto, he is sailing along the coast of Harima Province where the ship is caught in a heavy storm with waves even bigger than the gigantic Benkei, who is said to have been 2 metres (6.6 ft) tall.

The storm is believed to be caused by the vengeful ghosts of the men of the Taira clan, which Benkei and Yoshitsune had slain.

Holding his prayer beads in his hands, he knows for certain that the dragon, god of water, will protect his life and the boat of Yoshitsune during his travels on the resentful sea.
